In Appendix A, typical estimating charts are given for individual equipment cost and plant cost for use with quick estimation of total plant costs to be used with total product costs for preliminary estimates of profitability. In Appendix B supply and demand elasticity are described with evaluations for corn as a feed and a fuel, illustrating the difficulty in finding data to do the evaluation of these frequently used concepts. In Appendix C the latest status on global optimization is summarized with the currently more successful algorithms available in GAMS.

About the Author
Ralph W. Pike is the Director of the Minerals Processing Research Division and is the Paul M. Horton Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at Louisiana State University. His degrees are in chemical engineering, doctorate and bachelors from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is the author of a textbook on optimization for engineering systems and coauthor of four other books on design and modeling of chemical processes. He has directed fifteen doctoral dissertations and sixteen masters’ theses in chemical engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in Louisiana and Texas. His research has been sponsored by Federal and State agencies and private organizations with 107 awards totaling $5.6 million and has resulted in over 200 publications and presentations. His research specialties are optimization theory and applications for the optimal design of engineering systems, on-line optimization of continuous processes, optimization of chemical production complexes, and related areas of resources management, sustainable development, continuous processes for carbon nanotubes and chemicals from biomass.
