Andrew's Brain: A NovelBy E.L. Doctorow

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, SLATE, AND THE TELEGRAPH

This brilliant novel by the author of Ragtime, The Book of Daniel, Billy Bathgate, and The March takes us on a radical trip into the mind of a man who, more than once, has been the inadvertent agent of disaster. Speaking from an unknown place and to an unknown interlocutor, Andrew is thinking, Andrew is talking, Andrew is telling the story of his life, his loves, and the tragedies that have led him to this place and point in time. As he peels back the layers of his strange story, we are led to question what we know about truth and memory, brain and mind, personality and fate, about one another and ourselves. Probing, mischievous, and profound, Andrew’s Brain is a singular achievement in the canon of an American master.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, January 2014: From the start of this magnificent novel, we’re told that “Andrew” has done bad things. “I am numb to my guilt … incapable of punishing myself,” he tells the unnamed man he calls “Doc.” The things we don’t know about these two men are numerous. Where is Andrew? Who’s he speaking with? A shrink? A cop? And why? It gives nothing away to state that the unraveling of those and other questions is what makes this such a strange and compelling page turner. Via the tense Godot-like conversation/interrogation, we’re slowly exposed to Andrew’s life. Or at least a version of it. “You don’t know everything about me, Doc, you’re only hearing what I choose to tell you,” Andrew says. And later: “We’re all Pretenders.” We learn Andrew gave up his daughter to an ex-wife after his second wife died on 9/11--an event that echoes menacingly throughout this wise, witty, and unnerving examination of truth and memory. The conversation between two people who clearly know each other well, but distrust each another more, keeps us on shifting ground throughout. We eventually learn of Andrew’s murky role in the basement of a post-9/11 White House, and his run-in with characters named Chaingang and Rumbum. “Jesus, I don’t know why I talk to you,” Andrew huffs more than once. Not until the final page do we discover, he must. --Neal Thompson

From Booklist
*Starred Review* A man is talking about a friend, a cognitive scientist named Andrew, but it doesn’t take long for the person listening to him, possibly a psychoanalyst, to ask if he, in fact, is Andrew. He says he is. Furthermore, he reports that he’s numb to all emotions and that he hears voices. Worse yet, he’s been living under some sort of cosmic curse, unintentionally precipitating catastrophes right and left while he walks through the flames unscathed. There is much that is eerie and odd about Andrew’s exchanges with an unidentified, mostly silent interlocutor, and the stories he tells induce us to question his veracity and sanity. Did he cause a fatal car crash? An infant’s quiet death? A woman’s disappearance on 9/11? Did he drink cocktails with midgets? Hang out with the president during their Yale days? In stunning command of every aspect of this taut, unnerving, riddling tale, virtuoso Doctorow confronts the persistent mysteries of the mind—trauma and memory, denial and culpability—as he brings us back to one deeply scarring time of shock and lies, war and crime. Writing in concert with Twain, Poe, and Kafka, Doctorow distills his mastery of language, droll humor, well-primed imagination, and political outrage into an exquisitely disturbing, morally complex, tragic, yet darkly funny novel of the collective American unconscious and human nature in all its perplexing contrariness. --Donna Seaman

“Mind-bending . . . a fascinating and perplexing examination of a human being, invented by Doctorow but very real, who has suffered great trauma and desperately needs to believe he is not a monster.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“Absorbing . . . In Doctorow’s capable hands, Andrew is revealed to be a unique and sympathetic character—you’re just never sure whether he’s a redeemed lout or criminally insane. . . . Besides the wonderful prose, the book has humor and warmth and entertaining twists of plot.”—Houston Chronicle

“This is a brief book and, like many of the author’s recent offerings, a seemingly simple pleasure. But Doctorow cannot do anything simply, and he can’t help but write well. His lines in passing are the sort that other writers might work for years to perfect. And his insights, beautifully embedded in an irresistible story, are worthy of the best sort of big book.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“[Doctorow] locates and amplifies the human emotions that lend poignancy to particular moments in individual lives. . . . He illuminates these concepts by taking us inside the mind of a fully formed figure—a man whose pain, fear, desire and suffering we come to know and identify with. The journey from this novel’s unsettling, parabolical beginning to its ambiguous end is frequently disorienting, but it’s worth the trip.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“In stunning command of every aspect of this taut, unnerving, riddling tale, virtuoso Doctorow confronts the persistent mysteries of the mind—trauma and memory, denial and culpability—as he brings us back to one deeply scarring time of shock and lies, war and crime. Word will travel quickly about this intense and provocative novel by best-selling literary giant Doctorow.”—Booklist (starred review)

“Through this dialectic narrative, Doctorow connects to the common theme seen throughout his work: one’s history is often a battle between memory and self-struggle to maintain an image of morality and adequacy. Doctorow deftly captures the complex but beautiful vagaries of life in clean, simple language.”—Library Journal (starred review)

Praise for E. L. Doctorow

“On every level, [Doctorow’s] work is powerful. . . . His sensitivity to language is perfectly balanced, and complemented by a gigantic vision.”—Jennifer Egan

“E. L. Doctorow is a national treasure, and I mean this in a very specific sense: He has rewarded us, these forty-five years, with a vision of ourselves, as a people, a vision possessed of what I might call ‘aspirational verve’—he sees us clearly and tenderly, just as we are, but also sees past that—to what we might, at our best, become.”—George Saunders

“[His great topic is] the reach of American possibility, in which plain lives take on the cadences of history. . . . Doctorow’s prose tends to create its own landscape, and to become a force that works in opposition to the power of social reality.”—Don DeLillo

“A writer of dazzling gifts and boundless imaginative energy.”—Joyce Carol Oates, The New Yorker

“One of our greatest living writers . . . a virtuosic storyteller with enormous range.”—People

“Doctorow is a magician. . . . His prose is dazzling.”—Vogue

Conspiracy of Ravens is the sequel to Lila Bowen’s weird Western fantasy novel, Wake of Vultures. While I would suggest reading the books in order, the plots are such that you could feasibly get away with reading Conspiracy of Ravens first. However, you would be missing out on the ongoing character arcs. This review will contain spoilers for the first book, so read at your own risk. After jumping off the cliff at the end of Wake of Vultures, our protagonist has experienced some monumental self-discovery. For one, he’s realized that he is Rhett and a man, and the narrative no longer uses she/her pronouns. For another, he’s a shapeshifter. Once he resumes human form, he meets Earl O’Bannon, an Irish shifter who is desperate need of the Rangers. A railroad baron has been trapping monsters inside his camp and stealing body parts from them. This sounds like a job for the Shadow and his friends.Structurally, Conspiracy of Ravens was a lot more cohesive than the first book. It felt like much more of a unified plot and less like a monster of a week type format. While Rhett still had encounters with other creatures along his way to the railroad camp (noticeably a scene that felt like an homage to The Last Unicorn), it felt like one book instead of a series of strung together encounters. In the first book, I had been reading the protagonist as genderqueer, but Conspiracy of Ravens makes it clear that Rhett is a transman. He is no longer referred to as “Nettie” and the narrative uses he/him pronouns instead of she/her.However, I’m actually not a huge fan of Rhett. He’s sort of a jerk. Maybe part of it is that he’s somewhat lacking in social skills? But he’s also got more than a little sexism in him. I was hoping to see him grow on this front, but it doesn’t really happen in this book. It seems more like whenever he meets an admirable female character (and Winifred is totally awesome) he categorizes her as an exception to the general passiveness and weakness that is womenkind. But the sexism does feel more like a character trait than a narrative trait, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I’m still hoping that Rhett will have some character growth in this area in future books. My other complaint is that Rhett has way too many love interests. Look, I’m not a reader who’s a fan of love triangles, so a book with three love interests? Urgh, no thanks. I hope things get resolved fairly soon, because I’m tired of romance drama. All that said, I am definitely reading book three. I think Conspiracy of Ravens actually made some improvements upon the first book, and I’m excited to see where the series will go from here.I received an ARC of Conspiracy of Ravens from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The first book in this series was highly original, had a great narrative, excellent character development and was just overall a great read. It had a refreshingly different approach on sexuality and race that was relevant to the growth of the main character. The dialogue was well written and each character had a unique voice. The second book missed the mark in a lot of the areas that made the first so great. It reminded me of old scifi novels where the story seemed secondary to the message. The dialogue didn't read quite right and numerous moments of anachronistic phrases popped up. 'wall of nope' perhaps being the worst offender.I wanted to like this book, I still want to like the book...I'm up in the air on whether or not I'll be reading the next one. Based on how much I loved the first I'll probably give the next one a chance.

Conspiracy of Ravens (The Shadow: Book 2) literally takes off right where Wake of Vultures ends. Nettie finds herself indeed a skinwalker and a really huge raptor to boot. While she is growing accustom to this new form she happens upon Earl O'Bannon -- bearer of clothes, endless irritable dialogue, a new quest for The Shadow, and the gift to help Nettie/Rhett start down the path to find his true self. Old friends return and Rhett and his posse are on a mission to take care of a corrupt railroad tycoon who does not treat his monster employees well at all.During this time Rhett is constantly working out what it means to be Rhett and how his friends/posse truly care for him. At times the story gets bogged down in this process but eventually moves on to the next part of the adventure. The world of monsters and witches/alchemists is broadened and we get to explore a little more of Durango Territory. The ending definitely has a few leads that have you wanting the next book now.All in all a great read. I love having a western with a good dose of fantasy -- or is it a fantasy with a good dose of western -- and great characters. Again, there was a couple of times where the story telling got bogged down with some major character development but I guess that's going to happen when that character is struggling with gender identity. Two thumbs up, 4 of 5 stars -- you will enjoy it!

conspiracy of ravens by lila bowen. oh. My. GOD! this book is so, so good, and really explores some radical territory, especially in the area of gender. rarely have i encountered such power in simple pronouns like "he" and "she." in this follow-up to wake of vultures, bowen furthers the story of nettie lonesome, who is now rhett hennessy, who is the shadow. the shadow continues to gather an eclectic band of outsiders and misfits, as they seek to take down the cruel boss of a railroad outfit in mid-1800's texas. bowen, who is delilah dawson, writes with such pleasant, vivid, transportive prose, and rhett just gets more and more interesting. i must also commend bowen for being so thoughtful and thorough when writing about matters of gender, and race and ethnicity. she has such a knack for getting to the heart of a person, and allowing her characters to revel--and grow--in self-discovery. an utterly fantastic horror/fantasy/western.

Loved this book. I hate that I now have to wait for the next one. I thought I had seen every version of the complicated love life but Rhett's is new to me, and I love that. My favorite thing about a great book is that it gives you a new perspective to explore. Rhett is unique to anything I have read, and I love him. Hope for many more books (more then the planned 5 would be awesome!).

I thought this was better than the Wake of Vultures but not as good as Malice of Crows! Good character development and tragic western! I do keep hoping that Nettie (Rhett) will find happiness but know that The Shadow has no hope of doing so!

I really liked the sheer awesomeness of these books - Rhett is such a full and dynamic character and I love the dynamic between "monsters" and "non-monsters" - looking forward to book 3!
