About the Author
Shailesh Kumar Shivakumar is a Senior Technology Architect at Infosys Technologies Limited with over 13 years of industry experience. His areas of expertise include Java Enterprise technologies, Performance engineering, Enterprise portal technologies, User interface components and performance optimization. He is a Guinness world record holder of participation for successfully developing a mobile application in coding marathon. He has four patent applications including two US patent applications in the area of web and social technologies.

He was involved in multiple large-scale and complex online transformation projects for Fortune 500 clients of his organization. He also provided on-demand consultancy in performance engineering for critical projects across various units in the organization. His has hands-on experience on breadth of technologies including web technologies, portal technologies and database technologies and has worked on multiple domain areas such as retail, manufacturing, e-commerce, avionics etc. He was the chief architect of an online platform which won “best web support site” award among global competitors.

He is a regular blogger at Infosys Thought Floor and many of his technical white papers are published in Infosys external site. He has delivered two talks at Oracle JavaOne 2013 conference on performance optimization and project management and has presented a paper at IEEE conference on knowledge management systems. He also headed a center-of-excellence for portals and is currently the practice lead for enterprise portal practice. He led multiple thought-leadership and productivity improvement initiatives and was part of special interest groups (SIG) related to emerging web technologies at his organization.

He holds numerous professional certifications including Oracle Certified Master (OCM) Java Enterprise Edition 5, Sun certified Java programmer, Sun Certified Business component developer, IBM certified Solution Architect - Cloud computing, IBM Certified Solution Developer - IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1 and many others.
He has won numerous awards including prestigious Infosys Awards for Excellence 2013-14 “Multi-talented thought leader" under “Innovation - Thought leadership” category, “Brand ambassador award” for MFG unit, delivery excellency award and multiple spot awards and received honor from executive vice chairman of his organization. About the Author

Barry Tillman: As a human factors engineer, Barry has worked directly with designers, engineering drawings, and software developers for nearly 50 years to achieve safer and more cost-effective human-system interfaces. Barry has been involved with a broad range of systems including coal mining equipment, military vehicles, ships, manufacturing equipment, and space habitats. He has developed human factors analytical tools and written design standards for the military, NASA, and shipping industry. He has also developed and taught numerous human factors engineering and ergonomic courses. 

David J. Fitts: David worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for 27 years before retiring in 2015. In his career with NASA he was deeply engaged in the three major human spaceflight programs of his era: the Space Shuttle Program, the International Space Station (ISS) Program, and the next-generation Constellation Program for deep space exploration. During ISS and Constellation development phases, Mr. Fitts served the Agency as the Chief of the Habitability and Human Factors Branch, which focuses on ensuring human capabilities and limitations are strongly integrated into human spaceflight programs’ systems engineering and management processes. 

Wesley E. Woodson (deceased) was president of Man Factors Associates, a human factors consulting firm in El Cajon, CA.  Experienced in both military and domestic systems and product design in a broad range of applications, he was the author of the first edition of Human Factor Design Handbook: Human Engineering Guide for Equipment Designers (University of California Press, 1964).

Rhonda Rose-Sundholm:  Rhonda has over 26 years of communications experience in the aerospace industry.  She has worked directly with scientists, engineers and physicians to organize and communicate their information to diverse audiences. She has a background in business administration, configuration management, and information systems, including website design and management.

Peggy Tillman: Peggy was president of a human factors/ergonomics company for over 20 years.  She written, illustrated and designed numerous books, presentations, and reports. Ms.  Tillman has a degree in behavioral psychology and a teaching credential.  She is listed in Marquis Who's Who in the West and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.

Contradicting the common belief that chimpanzees in the wild are gentle creatures, Harvard anthropologist Wrangham and science writer Peterson have witnessed, since 1971, male African chimpanzees carry out rape, border raids, brutal beatings and warfare among rival territorial gangs. In a startling, beautifully written, riveting, provocative inquiry, they suggest that chimpanzee-like violence preceded and paved the way for human warfare?which would make modern humans the dazed survivors of a continuous, five-million-year habit of lethal aggression. They buttress their thesis with an examination of the ubiquitous rape among orangutans, gorilla infanticide and male-initiated violence and hyenas' territorial feuds, drawing parallels to the lethal raiding among the Yanomamo people of Brazil's Amazon forests and other so-called primitive tribes, as well as to modern "civilized" mass slaughter. In their analysis, patriotism ("stripped to its essence... male defense of the community") breeds aggression, yet, from an evolutionary standpoint, they reject the presumed inevitability of male violence and male dominance over women.

This system is definitely focused on a dancers understanding. But, I found it invaluable for the understanding it provides of the entire mechanization of movement as it is developed within us or the lack there of and how to reclaim what we may have missed along the developmental pathway or deficiencies we may have acquired due to injuries along the way as well. The reading is not light, but I found it totally fascinating and applicable and in applying the exercises in the way she prescribes actually experienced changes in the way I think and move in the world, and came to a much deeper understanding of the relationship of conciousness and how it is intrically woven and relates to our physical form and the movements our bodies or capable of making and intrically designed to produce. There is no separation. The way we were allowed to move or not as children sets patterns that we incorporate in the way we act and react to our inner and outer enviornment. Powerful book. I will never look at the body or movement in the same way again and that is a good thing.

This is an outstanding work, which, when published, was prescient of the connectivity we glibly call "mind-body". It's more relevant than ever today. Ms Hackney studied extensively with people in the forefront of somatic work bridging the aesthetic (dance), scientific, and therapeutic worlds, all of which drive the now burgeoning consciousness movement. Her language is precise, furthering literacy in the fields of anatomy and kinesiology, and includes detailed and remarkably clear descriptions of movement exercises that illuminate the concepts, structures, and functions of the body. There is also a warm and personable writing 'voice' here, which speaks to the depth of her knowledge, which is above all experiential. This is not a dry, plodding textbook; it's alive with experience and knowledge. Ms Hackney makes the subtle connections of the sentient body accessible to growing generations of movers, dancers, and anyone who seeks to live fully and gracefully. Her work on the page and in the studio/clinic leaves no doubt that a healthy, well-integrated body leads to a lively, empathic, and well-organized mind.

I study integration in Tai Chi and found this book full of good information to supplement my knowledge, I also do body work and this will be helpfull in that also. I would like to see the author do a workbook without the ancedotes and have larger pages and with pictures as an aid. I will possibly do a later review as I am still mastering the material, Northern Wu Tai Chi could add some integration ideas which I may detail later as I am not prepared at the moment. I bought this book taking a chance and was happily rewarded. I am adding some information to this review, for those interested in body integration from an eastern point of view, the core of Tai Chi I recommend "Warriors of Stillness" by Jan Depiersloot.

This is a very well written, incredibly intelligent book on Bartenieff fundamentals, I trained & was certified under Irmgard Bartenieff many years ago, and to me this is the most in depth and comprehensive book available on her Fundamentals. In addition, Ms Hackney has a gift for making things very understandable, which is the mark of a good teacher. Thank You, Rose Mitchell

This book contains absolutely great information. Glad to have found this book. It opened my mind wider than ever before to early childhood developmental patterns and our innate ability to reconnect to them. The editing of the entire book leaves too much to get lost in translation. Some strong nods towards relating it to what is going on anatomically, but purposely stops short on the scientific end.

What an amazing book! I will read this over and over!
