Ilaria L. E. Ramelli earned two MAs, a PhD, and a postdoctoral degree, and in the last fifteen years has been Young Researcher in Late Antiquity, Assistant in Roman History, in Ancient Historiography, Professor of History of the Roman Near East, and Assistant in Ancient Philosophy (Catholic University, 2003-present). She is the director of international research projects, Senior Visiting Professor in Greek Thought, as well as Church History Visiting Professor. She received, among other prizes and fellowships, two A. Gemelli Awards (1996, 1997), the M. This was our first attempt at "chapter books" without illustrations (there are a few). I was concerned about how things would go with my children who were 5 1/2, 3 1/2, and 1 1/2 at the time. The two older ones loved it and were constantly requesting more. The younger one not so much, as to be expected. A year and a half later, they still love these stories, and we enjoy reading. A single chapter is a good length for story time.

My Mom used to read Uncle Wiggily to my sister and I when we were young. It was always a favorite. When I saw this, I had to get it, so that I could pass on the same fond memories to my own children. And I was right -- This is one of their favorite books to read before bedtime! The stories are so fun and *innocent* and classic. :) This would make a great gift. Truly, you can't go wrong with Uncle Wiggily...

I ordered this book based on the other reviews and they did not disappoint. I bought it mainly for reading it outloud to my 6-year-old but quickly found out my 13- & 14-year-olds enjoy listening to it as well!!

I'm 77 years old and I loved having my Mom read Uncle Wiggly to me before I went to bed. When I got a few years older I then read it on my own. And when I was older still and had children of my own, I read it to each of my three daughters at bedtime. Now that I am old and grey and have 7 wonderful grandchildren I have carried on the tradition and each of them has had me read an Uncle Wiggly story to them at bedtime. 5+++ stars from me. Thank goodness I remembered this from my childhood. The stories are simple and predictable, but have a delightful quality. My kids LOVE it, elementary age, they are frozen in the backseat of the car with their mouths open listening while we drive to school. The reader is excellent, his voice just personifies a "kindly gentleman rabbit".

Excellent just wish it had more classic pics:) the grandkids and i love it. Timeless and memory making reading as was for me as a child:)

Love the stories and the characters. The best parts--for my children and me--are the funny story-ending paragraphs, which give a little "preview" of each next story. My grandchildren will love them, too.

again, more nostalgia made me get htis book for my grandchildren. I'm 70 and grew up with Uncle Wiggly books and always loved the story lines and characters. Great fun to read again and again!

From the Author
Traitors in Waiting is the first book in my Patriots series. I started writing it way back in 2001, when I was still in grad school at UC Santa Cruz, as a way to de-stress while writing my thesis. I had recently finished rereading Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series (highly recommended, BTW), and was thinking that I'd like to see more science fiction books written with a similarly snarky, cynical view of humanity. Not long after I started writing the book, Mr. Adams passed away, so I dedicated my Master's thesis to his memory and decided that I simply had to turn that still-in-progress short story into a full-blown novel.

The result was this book. By June of 2003, I had finished writing this book, and began writing the second book in the Patriots series, Enemies from Within. I finished writing that book some time in 2008 (and actually wrote the first few bits of the third book way back in 2006 while I was still writing EFW), but I didn't really start writing Beyond the Veil in earnest until about July of 2010--one of the hazards of fiction writing being a low-priority background project. By about April of 2011, I had finished writing the third book.

I've spent random bits of free time since then going through the books repeatedly and editing the verbiage, ensuring that the three books are properly synchronized (parts of all three books happen in parallel), building the production tools that I used to produce the PDFs for the print editions, plus two different EPUB (electronic) versions--one with all sorts of specific tweaks for Kindle readers, and one much more traditional version for EPUB readers.

And somewhere in there, I found the time to design all of the book covers, then redesign them with bigger, more readable fonts so that they'd look better in thumbnails, then redesign them again two or three more times as the final page counts and the final paperback dimensions changed (repeatedly). I also did some custom font design work, particularly for the electronic editions (for licensing reasons), though some of those tweaked fonts also made it into the print editions.

About the Author
David Gatwood, though relatively new to the fiction writing world, spent almost thirteen years of his life writing developer documentation for a major computer company before going back to writing software. His award-winning book on shell script programming has been compared with Kernighan and Ritchie in its style and coverage of the subject.
 
David is also a musician, writer, and hard-core geek. In addition to writing the Patriots series of books, he also did all of the content production and design, modified various fonts used in these books, and drew the cover art.
 
Besides writing books and software, David is an avid photographer, videographer, and musical composer. His choral music has been performed by the Diocesan Choir of Monterey, California and the contemporary choir at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz, CA. He spends much of his spare time performing with musical ensembles in the greater Santa Cruz area.
 
David also designed and maintains the websites for Gatwood Publishing, Patriots Books, Web-Scripted TV, the UCSC Wind Ensemble, Shell Script Games.com, and others.

I found most of the book to be a rehash of other material Oracle published. Most of the SQL I would not consider advanced. I felt if a intermediate at best. I bought this book about 6 months ago and after reading I have only used it once or twice as reference. There is some stuff in one of the middle chapters, but overall I was disappointed.

I am an ardent reader of Laurent Schneider's blog: [...] His deep understanding of databases is unparalleled. The tips he provides are very practical and handy. That's probably what raised my expectations from his book: "Advanced Oracle SQL Programming". I have just finished reading through this book and I can clearly say that I am a bit disappointed with the book.- It feels more like a collection of Laurent's notes on various Oracle SQL topics.- There is a disconnect between one topic and the next one.- Topics are very brief, often not exceeding 3-4 sentences. Much more detailed discussion/analysis of each concept would have made the book more readable.- More tips/tricks (like the ones in boxes with an explosive symbol) would have made me go back to this book often.- This may sound trivial, but the formatting of the code unnecessarily takes up too much space. e.g, in the first chapter itself, all the "INSERT" statements run to 8 pages! They could have easily been arranged 2 columns/page. They are not even required because it is available for download anyway at the book's website.Nice things I found in the book:- Exercise problems are really good, will make you think.- Explanation on Joins, Subquery and Hierarchical queries are so far the best I have read.

After few month of writing SQL, everyone has a good grasp of the language basics - you can use joins, where, group by and nested queries and 99% of the time, this is enough.But sometimes, this is not enough, or maybe it does the job, but its slow or ugly. And you wonder - is there a better way to select data?This book will show you a better way. Laurent Schneider is an Oracle developer with over a decade of experience. He shows you all the tricks and techniques that real experts use when writing queries."Advanced Oracle SQL Programming" covers every advanced function and feature that Oracle has to offer and gives plenty of real-life, business relevant examples of how these advanced features should be used. You'll find yourself writing better code almost immediately, and the book even contains exercises that will allow you to practice your new skills as you learn.

Probably the worst Technical book I have ever read. It is poorly formatted, and some paragraphs just do not make sense. Examples are weak, and not explained leaving you to toil over it to figure what the writter is trying to accomplish. I highly recommend avoiding this book. Do not make the costly mistake I did.
